HOW TO GUIDE: SETTING UP A TRIPOD

Through us learning how to set up a tripod quickly, safely and effectively we have gained the skills that we need for filming. We will be able to set up all of our equipment swiftly now and have optimum time carrying out interviews, vox pops and filming instead of wasting time trying to set up equipment.

PLANNING: ORGANISING INTERVIEW, VIDEO OF PHONE CALL TO EXPERT

Thursday 9 October 2014

PLANNING: ORGANISING INTERVIEWS 3

When discussing possible experts we tried to think outside the box as when it comes to the selfie, there's no large precedent. We got thinking and thought that selfies are most often taken on mobile phones and so decided we could talk to some mobile phone expert.

We went into our local town centre where all the mobile phone shops are based, and asked around in Apple, Three and Virgin. The answers were all the same, the staff including managers couldn't comment. They were not allowed unless permitted by their head office, despite our documentary  being a student documentary and for non-commercial purposes.

In the end we realised without permission from a head office which would take weeks so, we decided we would look more locally. I then realised I know a boy who is an all round technology expert. This boy is called James Light. We decided to use him as he works for his own company going him a professional title we can use, and being young student he will have fresh information and is relatable to our target audience.

Below are screen shots of the texts messages sent before the call was made, just to give James a heads up.

PROGRESS STATEMENT 3

TARGETS

As a group we have learnt to set ourselves targets each lesson so everything can get done. Today we set 4:

1. Finish expert questions for interview.
2. Write vox pop questions for interview.
3. Start to organise expert interview.
4. Plan and sketch story board

We successfully completed these tasks as we helped each other when struggling. However we had negative responses from our experts as a psychology teacher said no, Apple and Virgin also said no. However we are persevering to get similar experts for our interview. We have started to draft a story board together so we have an idea of how our documentary is going to start.

PLANNING: QUESTIONS FOR EXPERTS

TARGETS

We thought of some targets we would complete in the lesson. These were completed because as a group we worked on different tasks to complete them. Setting tasks is good because then the whole group know exactly who is doing what and specific tasks that are being completed.

REVIEWING QUESTIONNAIRE RESULTS: PROGRESS STATEMENT

REVIEW OF QUESTIONNAIRE RESULTS

TASK 12D: RESEARCH INTO SIMILAR PRODUCTS - PART 2

After analysing and researching into two existing documentaries that I found myself, I decided to look at one more to extend my knowledge and become prepared when it came to creating our own. I analysed 'Super Size Me' in forms of codes, conventions and representation as it was a very interesting documentary to watch. We will defiantly be looking back at this documentary while constructing our own as I felt that this documentary was very strong and successful.

TASK 12D: RESEARCH INTO SIMILAR PRODUCTS - PART 1

I analysed the first 10 minutes of two documentaries before we started to create our own. The purpose of doing this was important because as a group we needed to gain knowledge about existing products in order to create our own ideas and become inspired about techniques that these documentaries use. It would also assist us in creating a meaning that our target audience would understand. As these documentaries follow specific codes and conventions that are correct, it will aid us to follow them as well. This will make sure we create a successful documentary that appeals to our target audience.

TASK 12C: RESEARCH INTO OUR TOPIC: MOOD BOARD

These are the most popular images that relate to selfies. We feel that this gives an accurate representation of society's general views of the selfie.

As you can see the selfie is quite a humorous thing used by many, for either documenting a moment or simply for fun, and that is how society views it. Our documentary's purpose is to look further into it and see if it really is all just fun or if there are some negatives to it.

TARGETS

We wanted to show the worlds general view on the selfie craze in the visual form of images. It gives a representation of general society by showing the most popular images relating to the selfie. So Connie and I decided to spend a lesson creating a mood board. We successfully did this in the time we set and is shown below.

TASK 12C: RESEARCH INTO OUR TOPIC

TASK 12B: AUDIENCE RESEARCH PART TWO

TASK 12A: AUDIENCE RESEARCH PART ONE

How has the research we conducted influenced the way we represent demographics in our documentary?

We conducted our research at Solihull Sixth Form. The majority of our results were from people aged 17-18 years old. There were very few adults available to answer our questionnaire. It was evened that the younger people had a wider knowledge of technology and selfie culture in comparison to the adults; because of this we made the conscious decision to focus our documentary on a younger generation. This creates a stereotypical representation of young people and adults. Young people as obsessed with technology and the older generation less confident and knowledgeable regarding technology. It would be fair to say that our documentary id following mainstream media stereotypes yet it serves a purpose. In our documentary we have showed a variety of opinions regarding selfie culture, not just the positive aspects. We have endorsed the mainstream ideology but explored the different opinions that reside within it.
